Community Planner
Duties & Responsibilities (summary):
- Conduct outreach with “friends”/clients of Helping Hands to collect data on residence/encampment locations, services used, and services needed.
- Create and maintain a secure, confidential map/database (digital or paper) of clients’ living locations, encampments, and service-usage patterns.
- Coordinate with staff, volunteers, and community service agencies to verify data and update records.
- Help analyze gaps in service usage and prepare summary reports to support advocacy and resource planning (e.g. for municipal outreach).
Justification / How it meets CSJ quality & community benefit criteria:
- This project addresses a real community-need: mapping where unhoused clients live and what services they use/don’t use — enabling better resource allocation.
- It will help Helping Hands and the City respond more effectively to local priorities (homelessness, community support) — aligns with CSJ’s objective of supporting community organizations providing social supports.
- Provides youth with skills: data collection, community outreach, research, mapping, communication, confidentiality, teamwork — valuable for future work or further studies.
Supervision plan:
- Supervisor job title: “Operations Director”
- Type: on-site + off-site (for mapping/database work)
- Frequency: daily check-ins in the field; weekly formal review meetings.
- Feedback: Informal daily guidance; formal weekly written or verbal check-ins.
Preferred education level: high school or post-secondary (but open)
Hours / Duration / Wage: 35 hours/week, 8 weeks wage: CAD $21/hour
